This was taken during the time there was a very real threat to the life of Salman Rushdie thanks to a Fatwa over the Satanic Verses. He attended the launch of his friend and author Irving's new book, Son of the Circus along with a Police escort. In fact, the Fatwa is still current with a $600,000 bounty and after a recent attempt on his life, he has been left with sight in only one eye and the use of one hand.
